The First Grey Day

Arabian Sea · 9.0° N, 70.5° E

The bow of a container ship vanishing into pale grey mist over a calm sea.

The sky went grey before breakfast and showed no inclination to reconsider. Until now the Arabian Sea has generally made some effort with its appearance. Today it seemed to have withdrawn the entire colour department. The light lay flat across the ship, giving familiar surfaces the subdued look of objects waiting for someone to decide what happens next.

By noon the horizon had vanished into mist. Water and sky met somewhere beyond sight, and the whole ship appeared to be moving inside a blank sheet of paper. It was an oddly complete disappearance. There was no dramatic edge to it, no useful curtain, simply a gradual refusal to show anything that might establish scale or distance.

The sea itself remained calm, almost apologetic, as though aware that this lack of a horizon was inconvenient but outside its particular responsibilities. I went to the bridge, where the muted view through the windows made the interior feel especially definite. The low sounds of the ship continued, reassuringly indifferent to my need for scenery and visible proof of progress.

Priya said visibility was poor but conditions were routine. Her delivery made a sensible distinction between something looking unsettling and something actually requiring alarm. I accepted it gratefully. I stayed on the bridge longer than necessary because routine looks impressive from there, especially when practised by someone who knows precisely what she is doing. Priya tolerated my presence with an expression suggesting that silent admiration was acceptable, provided it remained silent.
